Earlier this year we introduced you to one of the Police Academy’s newest graduates, Matias Ferreira. Prior to joining the police department, Officer Ferreira was a Marine who was deployed to Afghanistan in 2011. While on active duty, he stepped on an explosive device; he broke his pelvis and lost both of his legs. He has worked very hard to advance his skills and physical strength, adapting to his prosthetics that enabled him to function at the capacity necessary to become a police officer. Even so, everyday life presents challenges for those with special needs. Homes for Our Troops honored his service by building Officer Ferreira and his family a home, completely retrofitted to accommodate his special needs. This is the 271st home that has been donated to injured veterans. During this holiday season of giving and gratitude, Matias and his family are overjoyed and humbled by the gift of “home” and are so grateful to be home for the holidays.
